There’s something genuinely magical about Valentine’s Day. On Saturday, February 14th, millions of people around the world will pause their busy lives to celebrate love in all its beautiful forms. And honestly? That’s pretty wonderful.
Let’s talk about the tale of Two Hearts.
Heart of the Holiday
If you think about it, at its core, Valentine’s Day is about connection, whether you are celebrating with a romantic partner or your best friends.
I think only girls will do that.
Saint Valentine, a priest who defied Emperor Claudius II’s ban on marriage for soldiers. Valentine secretly married the couple. Valentine was later executed for what he did. But it was a gesture of love.
Traditions that bring Joy
Below are some traditions that people do.
- **145 million cards** are exchanged annually, making it the second-largest card-sending holiday after Christmas
- Handwritten notes expressing feelings that often go unsaid throughout the year
- Couples cooking meals together, creating memories over shared experiences
- “Galentine’s Day” celebrations that honor the friendships that sustain us
Parents creating special moments with their children, teaching them about expressing love
* Elementary school Valentine exchanges that still light up kids’ faces with pure joy
Thoughtful Ness
It is all about what thought you put into it.
- The husband who spends a lot of time in the flower shop trying to remember what the wife likes this year
- The couple who gets the same card, because you know they would like that
- That person who remembers what candy you like and leaves it on your desk.
- A homemade card from a child, created and colored with care.
The Dark Side
Yes, just as there is a dark side to everything in life, there is a dark side to Love Day. Over the years, Valentine’s Day has strayed from its roots and become more of a commercial movement. Love is not all about money, not in that way.
Americans will spend an estimated $27.5ish billion this year. Yes, you read that right. That is a lot of money.
- $6.2 billion on jewelry
- $2.3 billion on flowers
- $2.3 billion on candy
- Billions more on cards, dining, gifts, and experiences
- And child care, for the upcoming years
Yes, it looks like the corporations have turned this into a very, very expensive day.
What can you do
Well, you do some of the things I have talked about.
- Write a letter to someone you appreciate
- Cook a meal together from Scratch
- Take a long walk and talk, leave the phones at home
- Take your phones and create a photo album of pictures of a certain trip or memory
- We have iPhones, so it is easy to do that
- Volunteer together doing something meaningful
- Spend time together doing nothing. Just being there.
My Thoughts
Well, that about sums up all the thoughts that I could put down in writing and in a video. We all have different thoughts about things. I don’t like Valentine’s Day. You might, but it is all about me. So I will give you my true and honest thoughts.
I think it is all about money; the more you spend, the more you love someone. No, that isn’t how things go.
