It is OK Not to Be OK: My Real Battle with Mental Health

I have talked about depression before, I think several times. Mental health is a very big thing. It affects your everyday life.

Mental Health

This shapes the way you think, feel, and act as you navigate life’s ups and downs. One might think that if you have an absence of mental illness like depression or anxiety, then you are fine. You are not. It is a dynamic State of balance that determines how well you handle stress, relate to other people, and make choices.

Mental health is generally built on three interconnected areas:

  1. Emotional Well-being:
    1. Your ability to recognize, understand, and manage your feelings. It is what allows you to experience happiness, navigate grief, and bounce back from setbacks (resilience).
  2. Psychological Well-being:
    1. How you view yourself and your life. This includes your self-esteem, your sense of purpose, and how you process thoughts and information.
  3. Social Well-being:
    1. The quality of your connections. It involves how you communicate with others, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to your community.

Your mental health is something that controls you more than you think. Your thoughts control most of what you do.

If you have good mental health, then:

  • You will have good thoughts
  • You will be motivated to get things done
  • You will be happy
  • You will have a positive outlook on life

If you have bad mental health, then:

  • You will have negative thoughts
  • You will not be motivated to get things done
  • You will not be happy
  • You will not have a positive outlook on life
  • You will not enjoy the things you used to do.
  • You will struggle with thoughts of staying alive
  • You will struggle with the daily grind in life
  • You will push people away
  • You will isolate yourself
  • You will have an unexplained decline in your performance at work or school.
  • You will feel numb, detached, or State that you don’t care about anything anymore.
  • You will experience severe insomnia.
  • You will gain weight since you see Food as a coping method.
  • You will lose weight since you aren’t hungry anymore.
  • You will have brain fog. Not remember how to do certain things, struggle to concentrate, or make everyday decisions that were once easy.

These are just some of the things I put together.

Look at me

Let’s take a look at the list of bad mental health:

  • You will have negative thoughts
    • All the time
  • You will not be motivated to get things done
    • Nope, I am not
  • You will not be happy
    • Nope, I am not
  • You will not have a positive outlook on life
    • What is positive
  • You will not enjoy the things you used to do.
    • I have stopped doing all the things I enjoyed
  • You will struggle with thoughts of staying alive
    • Yep, I struggle
  • You will struggle with the daily grind in life
    • Yes, I do struggle
  • You will push people away
    • Yep, I have been doing this a lot lately
  • You will isolate yourself
    • I do isolate myself either in my office or where no one else is
  • You will have an unexplained decline in your performance at work or school.
    • I used to have a lot of those issues at school, and I never worked until the last 6 or 7 years.
  • You will feel numb, detached, or State that you don’t care about anything anymore.
    • Yep, I don’t care
  • You will experience severe insomnia.
    • I don’t have an issue with this anymore.
  • You will gain weight since you see Food as a coping method.
    • Yep, Food- something I gravitate towards when I am struggling, and it isn’t healthy stuff. It is sugar and sweet things.
  • You will lose weight since you aren’t hungry anymore.
    • I wish I could lose my appetite.
  • You will have brain fog. Not remember how to do certain things, struggle to concentrate, or make everyday decisions that were once easy.
    • Yes, I do have brain fog, and I have had it for the last few years.

Do I have bad mental health?

You bet your ass I do.

Over the Years

It has been a constant battle, you know the ups and downs of life, the stress, the thoughts of being a failure. You know the typical stuff that goes on. Sometimes I wonder if it is getting better or getting worse and worse. It definitely has its ups and downs.

Remember, it is OK not to be OK.
