My view on the College Football Playoffs

We hear my opinion on the College Football Playoff (CFP) system. This is something new this year. Let’s talk about it.

Old Format

Before the National Champion was crowned via ranking, let’s go way back. However, they wanted to do something different since the 1984 National Champions was not what the Championship committee wanted.

Brigham Young University was crowned the national champion. That didn’t sit well.

They needed to think of something else, but that didn’t come immediately. It took a while.

Bowl Championship Series

Called BCS, was to determine the champion for the college season. The committee would pick the match-up of teams to play. This was all decided via a committee. Fair, right?

They would pick from the conference champion from each of the six conferences.

  • Atlantic Coast Conference
  • Big East
    • Now, the American Athletic Conference
  • Big 10
  • Big 12
  • Pac-12
  • Southeastern Conference

And four other schools or three since Notre Dame was likely an auto bid.

They are placed in the

  • Rose Bowl
  • Fiesta Bowl
  • Orange Bowl
  • Sugar Bowl

So, if you were in the Western Athletic Conference, Big Sky, Mountain West Conference, or any other conference that is part of the “Big 6,” you would never see a prestigious BCS bowl game or a shot at the national championship.

They didn’t want another BYU team to win the national championship; they wanted only the correct conference to do so.

If you can’t tell, I am not a big of the BCS (Bowl Crap Series). That is what it is. Just full of crap.

Starting in 2014, they moved to a 4 team playoff, in which they, the committee, picked.

College Football Playoffs

For the 2024 season, they moved to a 12-team playoff bracket, which was nice. Boise State reached the bracket of 12 and is currently in the Mountain West Conference. I know, right? Oddly, they would do that.

The College Football Playoff Committee had the majority of SEC and Big 10 teams in this playoff. Ohio State, Big 10, won the first national championship in this 12-team bracket.

Now, is this the best way to do this? Probably not. But I am just a keyboard-typing person. Voicing my opinion.

Well, they move to a 14-team bracket?

You never know.

Thoughts

It is an improvement for the Bowl Crap Series in a big way, but it has a long way to go. They don’t need to take two bowls and play them in January. I think other schools should be able to play in those bowl games.

The four teams left can be played at a neutral site, just like the championship game.

I am not sure what the best way to do this would be. The NFL playoff systems, in my opinion, suck as well. But this is a step in the right direction.
