The day we have been waiting for has arrived: GAME DAY. Let’s see how it went for BYU.
Setting
The game started at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah, at 6 PM MDT. What a great night for a game! I watched the game on TV. It was a lovely evening.
First Half
Both teams started slowly. Nothing much was going on. Portland State’s offense was on the field more than BYU’s. The first score of the game was a blocked field goal, and BYU picked it up and ran for a touchdown. BYU was up 7.
Then it was all BYU for the rest of the Half.
BYU would score
1st quarter 14
2nd quarter 35
So at half-time the score was
Portland State | 0 |
BYU | 49 |
Good first Half. Bear came out slowly, but the rhythm picked up and went downtown.
He scored two running TDs.
He will be out for the 2nd Half.
2nd Half
The starters were out of the game, and Hillstead started the second Half and played the third quarter. Then T. Bourguet came in and played the fourth. So all three got to play today. It was just a Half to get the backups some playing time.
The final score was
Portland St | 0 |
BYU | 69 |
Good showing for BYU and Portland State, which have a long road ahead.
Stats
Let’s look at the stats for the game
Portland State | Stats | BYU |

51 | Yards | 606 |
1.2 | Yards per Paly | 9.2 |

20 | Penalty Yards | 55 |
25:38 | Time of Poss | 34:22 |
It looks like BYU controlled that game reasonably well. I mean, it is always a goal to hold a team to under 100 yards, and BYU did that on Saturday Night, Aug. 30, 2025
Thoughts on the Game
The game started slowly, but BYU found its groove and kept on going. I really didn’t think it would be a close game. Portland St. will have to get some stuff figured out. Like, get a QB and stick with one. I think they were rotating between three of them. That isn’t a good option. Hard to get the timing down, and the offense is growing.
Bear looked like a good fit for the BYU offense. I think he realized that there were over 65,000 people in the stands, coming from High School to this. But he did a good job.
Next Week
Stanford comes to town with an 8:15 PM kickoff time on ESPN. It should be a good game.
