BYU Dominates East Carolina 34-13: Bachmeier Throws 4 TDs, Defense Forces 1 Pick-Sixes in Road Victory

It was a slow start to the game, and I was not sure what was going to happen in this game.

Game

East Carolina leads the series, 2-1. In the last meeting, East Carolina won with a last-second FG, 27-24. So, how will it go this time?

Throughout this post, East Carolina Pirates will be ECP.

First Half

BYU kicked off, and ECP ran it back a pretty good distance. They thought they would break it for a touchdown, but they didn’t. They ended up turning it over on downs.

BYU kicked a field goal to take the lead 3-0.

Boring first quarter,  ECP would kick a field goal to make it

ECP3

BYU held them to just 3 points in the first half. No Touchdown.

In the second quarter, BYU came alive and, sort of, kicked another FG.

BYU’s E. Johnson intercepted the ball at the goal line, preventing a TD.

BYU’s E.Johnson intercepted the ball again at the ECP 4 and ran it in for a pick six

Thus making the score

ECP3

That is how the half ended.

BYU had three interceptions in the first half, but one was nullified due to a penalty.

Second Half

BYU got the ball to begin the third quarter. BYU scored a TD, and now they are up 20-3

ECP kicked a FG.

BYU still hasn’t allowed a TD so far this season. Will that last?

BYU started to pull away, but ECP returned and scored a TD, so BYU has allowed a TD. Dang it.

BYU ended up winning the game

Thoughts

Key Performances:

•        Bear Bachmeier (BYU QB): Had an excellent night with eight touchdowns through three games — four rushing, four passing — while completing 73% of his passes for 233 yards. He added a 16-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

•        Evan Johnson (BYU CB): Had two interceptions, including a pick-six touchdown from the East Carolina 4-yard line . His first interception prevented an ECU touchdown in the red zone.

Defensive Dominance:

BYU’s defense held East Carolina without a touchdown for over 11 quarters, dating back to previous games, finally allowing their first touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a Katin Houser quarterback keeper.

This was BYU’s first road test of the year and, for the freshman quarterback, his first road trip in college.

He did pretty well.

Next Week

BYU travels to Colorado to take on the Buffaloes in Boulder.
