Let’s talk about Coach Life

Going from playing at BYU to coaching at the Arch Rival, the Utah Utes. He came in as a position coach and worked his way up to head coach. When Urban Meyer left in 2004. Kyle was the head coach starting in 2005.

He turned down teams like Tennessee and BYU when they came a-knockin’. Let’s look at some stats.

  • Overall Record
    • 177-88 (.668 winning percentage)
  • Bowl Record
    • 11-6
      • Renowned for his early career bowl win streak
  • Championships
    • 3 conference titles
      • Mountain West 2008
      • Pac-12, 2021, 2022
  • Key Achievement
    • Led Utah to an undefeated season and a Sugar Bowl win in 2008. They went 13-0 and beat  Alabama 31-17
  • Accolades
    • 2x national coach of the year
      • 2008, 2019
    • Multiple conference coach of the year awards.

He coached for over 30 years as a Ute and 21 years as the head coach. What a career.

2024

He was going to retire at the end of the 2024 season. But the Utes went 5-7 in their first year in the Big 12 and lost to BYU. He couldn’t go out on that note. So he came back in 2025. Yes, that decision did ruffle some feathers.

2025

The second year in the Big 12 Conference was better for them. They went 7-2 in conference and 11-2 overall. The only two losses were to Texas Tech at home and BYU in Provo.

He had a good year, could have retired after 21 years, and gone out on top. But that wasn’t on the agenda.

Wild two weeks

Coach Whittingham wanted to come back for another year. However, that didn’t sit very well with some people. They offered him an advisory role. But they wanted him to retire so they could bring in the new coach, Nick something. He has been the coach in waiting. He has been the defensive coach for a while.

So he retired as head coach and was supposed to finish out his career at the Las Vegas Bowl in 2025. But he wasn’t there.

Where did he go?

Michigan

Yep, he went to Michigan. He didn’t show up to his last game as the coach of the Utah Utes. Apparently, when he retired on Dec. 12, 2025, that was it. On Dec. 26, 2025, he took the head coach job at Michigan.

Which meant that he showed up to Michigan’s bowl game and skipped the Utah game.

Was that a slap in the face to a program that he gave 30 years to? Not to show up for the last game?

I think it was a good move on his part.

Thoughts

These are my thoughts on Kyle. He was a great player and coach. He proved a lot and was very well-liked. I had great respect for him. Just not when he coached against BYU and won all those years.

The question is, how well does he do at Michigan? If he doesn’t produce quickly, Michigan will move on.

Also, he took Jay Hill from BYU. Not cool.

As I said, it was a wild two weeks.
