It was the last game of the regular season for BYU and the previous game for Houston. So, how will this game go?
Questions
- BYU lost two games in a row. Will this be the third?
- Will the offense show up? I need some points scored.
- The defense needs to show up. Will they?
- How will Houston come into the game?
The Game
I am watching this game from the comfort of my home, in front of a fire.
It is a night game at LaVell Edwards Stadium, and the temperature is 28 degrees. It is a nice clear night; at least it isn’t snowing. This is a must-win game, but if Iowa St. wins, they will be in the Big 12 Championship.
I hate it when there is another game on before the BYU game, and one team is winning big time, but they won’t transfer it over to the BYU game. The teams playing before are SEC teams. However, they wouldn’t hesitate to move a game BYU played to an SEC game.
First Quarter
BYU got the ball first, but due to a mismanagement of the reverse, the ball popped loose, and a defensive lineman took it down to the 20-yard line. Houston then threw a pick.
Houston got the punt on the 20-yard line, went down the field, and scored a touchdown.
Houston 7
BYU 0
There was plenty on BYU, so Houston kicked off from the 50. They did an onside kick, and BYU picked it up and ran it back for a touchdown.
Houston 7
BYU 7
Second Quarter
Houston went down the field and kicked a FG, making it
Houston 10
BYU 7
BYU comes down the field and scores a TD
Houston 10
BYU 14
There was a delay in the game on the defense. That was an exciting call against Houston. BYU fumbled it in the next play but recovered it. Retzlaff ran it short of the first down, and BYU punted it.
There are under two min left in the first half.
BYU got the ball back, went down the field, and scored on a 13-yard run by Retzlaff.
Houston 10
BYU 21
Thoughts on the first half
Houston has some fight left in them. Coming into this game, they were 4 -7 for the year. They were fired up. Houston scored their first offensive touchdown in several games. I have a lot of respect for them. Houston was doing well at keeping the offense in check, but BYU scored 21.
Third Quarter
Houston came out and threw a pick, and BYU took it down the short field and fumbled the ball on the 6-yard line. This was another back-to-back turnover.
Another BYU fumble, this time on the punt, and Houston gets it at midfield. What the heck, BYU?
BYU got it back and went down and kicked a FG, putting the score at
Houston 10
BYU 24
That is how the quarter would end.
Fourth Quarter
Houston is not giving up. They scored a touchdown down the field and then went for two points and got them.
Houston 18
BYU 24
BYU would go down and score the nail in the coffin score.
Houston 18
BYU 30

My Thoughts
This game wasn’t huge. Win or Lose, BY wasn’t going to the Championship game. Due to Kansas State losing.
But Houston came in there and was ready to play. They let go of the offensive coordinator due to the lack of offense touchdowns in the last several games., butthey scored one touchdown in the first quarter against BYU.
They came out to play.
It was a closer game than I thought it would be. The slippery and cold field may have contributed to that.
On the last BYU touchdown, a little fight broke out. I guess frustrations got the best of players. One player from each team was ejected. Not a good thing.
BYU did win, putting them at 10 -2 for the year.
What is next
I was looking forward to a game in Arlington, Texas, for the BYU Cougars’ Big 12 championship. However, that didn’t come into play for them. However, there is always a bowl game. They probably have no chance in hell to get into the playoffs, but it has been a great season.
The Big 12 championship will be played on Dec. 7, 2024, and I will not only blog about it but also do a video about that game.
